Before planning anything, get honest numbers: how many DSA problems can you solve unaided, does your resume have a real project, and how strong are your core CS fundamentals. Write these down — this baseline is what every later phase measures progress against. Most wasted prep time comes from skipping this and jumping straight to "grinding."

Pick one primary language (Java, C++, or Python) and get genuinely fluent in it — syntax should never slow you down in an interview. Alongside this, build a working understanding of OOP concepts, since almost every interviewer probes them regardless of role.

Set Up Your Public Profile
Get GitHub, LinkedIn, and a coding profile (LeetCode or GeeksforGeeks) in order before you need them under pressure. A clean GitHub with even 2–3 real repos, a complete LinkedIn with a clear headline, and an active coding profile all signal seriousness before a recruiter reads a single resume line.

Phase 1 is about removing excuses, not achieving mastery. By day 30 you should have a working resume, a public profile that doesn't embarrass you, and a daily DSA habit — not perfection. Perfection comes from repetition in the phases ahead, not from getting Phase 1 flawless.

Build one real, deployed, fullstack project — not a tutorial clone — that solves an actual problem, however small. Learn System Design Basics
For most fresher and intern roles, this means low-level design — clean class structure, basic design patterns — plus a light introduction to high-level concepts like scalability, caching, and database choice. You don't need to design a distributed system yet; you need to explain your project's architecture clearly.

Step 9 · What every core round tests
Core CS Subjects Deep Dive
DBMS (normalization, joins, indexing), OS (processes, threads, memory management), and CN (OSI/TCP layers, HTTP basics) show up in almost every core technical round. Build a one-page cheat sheet per subject covering the questions asked most often, and revisit it weekly rather than cramming once.

Contribute to Open Source or Build in Public
Even a handful of merged pull requests or a public build-log of your flagship project adds credibility that a resume line alone can't. This doesn't need to be a major open-source project — fixing documentation, small bugs, or posting weekly progress updates all count and show initiative.

Phase 2 is where most students either build momentum or quietly fall behind. Your project and your DSA habit should be running in parallel, not sequentially — don't wait to "finish DSA" before starting the project, or you'll run out of runway before Phase 3.

This is where placement rounds actually differentiate candidates: tree traversals and manipulation, graph algorithms (BFS/DFS, shortest paths), and dynamic programming (knapsack-style, longest subsequence patterns). Don't chase every DP variant — master the 15–20 patterns that repeat most often across companies.

Solving problems alone on a screen is a different skill from solving them out loud, under time pressure, while someone watches. Do at least 3 mock interviews — with peers, seniors, or a platform — before your first real one, and record yourself at least once to catch habits you can't see from the inside.

Prepare STAR Stories for the HR Round
Write out 4–5 real stories from your projects, teamwork, or coursework using the STAR structure — Situation, Task, Action, Result — that can flex across multiple common HR questions (conflict, failure, leadership, pressure). Prepare the shape, not a memorized script, so you sound natural instead of rehearsed.

Revise System Design & Project Deep-Dive Answers
Be ready to explain your flagship project's architecture, the trade-offs you made, and what you'd do differently with more time — this is one of the most common technical-round segments. Prepare answers for "why this database," "how would this scale," and "what was the hardest bug you hit."

Resume Tailoring Per Company or Role
Adjust your resume's emphasis — which projects lead, which skills are listed first — to match each company's stated stack and role, rather than sending one static resume everywhere. This takes 10 minutes per application and meaningfully improves how relevant you look to an ATS and a human reader alike.

Referrals meaningfully increase response rates, so it's worth spending real time building those connections before this phase, not scrambling for them in it.

Ace the Online Assessment Round
Practice under actual test conditions — a timer, no notes, a proctored-style environment — since OA platforms differ from casual problem-solving. Know the common OA question types for your target companies in advance (aptitude, DSA, sometimes SQL) so nothing on the day itself is a surprise.

Technical Interview Rounds — 1 to 3
Expect a mix of live DSA, project deep-dives, and core CS questions across multiple rounds. Think out loud in every round — interviewers evaluate your reasoning process at least as much as your final answer, and silent thinking gives them nothing to evaluate.

Research market compensation for the role, level, and location before any negotiation conversation, and evaluate the full offer — role, team, growth path, and compensation — not just the number on the letter. It's fine to ask for time to review before accepting; a rushed decision here outlasts the 90-day plan by years.

Applications are a numbers game with a quality floor. A tailored application to 30 well-matched companies will consistently outperform a generic blast to 200 — the goal in Phase 4 is targeted volume, not maximum volume.

Where Otherwise-Strong Candidates Lose the Most Ground

🚩 Tutorial-hopping without finishing anything
Starting a new course or project every time momentum dips leaves you with ten half-finished things and nothing to show. Finish the flagship project before starting a second one.

Solving a problem once and moving on feels productive but doesn't build recall. Revisit problems you struggled with after a week — that's where retention actually happens.

This roadmap is a loop, not a straight line. If interviews don't land immediately after Phase 4, cycle back into DSA revision and mock interviews rather than starting from scratch — most successful placements come after more than one attempt.
